Enhanced ACT Gotchas — Know These Before Test Day
Enhanced ACT = New Timing & Counts
Train Enhanced limits, not classic ACT: English 35 min / 50 Q (40 scored); Math 50 min / 45 Q (41 scored); Reading 40 min / 36 Q (27 scored); Science (optional) 40 min / 40 Q (34 scored). Classic 75/60/40 habits will mis-pace you. Confirm your test date rules at act.org.
Science Is Now Optional
Composite = average of English, Math, and Reading only (each 1–36). Science is a separate 1–36 score when taken and is not in the default composite. Decide early whether colleges you care about want Science—and whether those hours would raise your composite more.
No Penalty for Guessing
Like SAT, no wrong-answer penalty. Always fill every bubble. Educated guessing on last 30 seconds of each section is free points.
Paper vs. Digital Testing
ACT offers both paper and digital. Format differs slightly (digital has on-screen timer, highlighter). Confirm your test center's format and practice that mode.
Math: Calculator Allowed Throughout
No no-calculator section. TI-84 or approved calculator on all 45 questions. Bring your own—don't rely on test-center devices.
Official Practice Tests Are the Only Score Truth
Third-party books (Kaplan, Princeton, Barron's) write harder or easier tests. Only ACT's own PDFs and Official Guide give real score signals. Trust official scores only.

Classic ACT Clock Myths (75/60/40 as Current Primary)
Enhanced ACT shortened English and Math and made Science optional. Old pacing drills and “always take Science” advice train the wrong product.
Better: Use current clocks: English 50Q/35m, Math 45Q/50m, Reading 36Q/40m, Science 40Q/40m if you sit it. Composite = English + Math + Reading only.
Science FOMO When Colleges Don’t Need It
Sitting Science “just in case” steals hours from the three composite sections. Weak Science on a score report can distract you even when it doesn’t enter the composite.
Better: Run the Science? hub prompt once with your college list. If NO, reallocate those hours to the leaking core section.
Treating Chat AI as Score Truth
Models invent passage difficulty and grade pacing loosely. A chat “28” is not an official practice composite.
Better: AI = tutor layer (transitions, calculator boundaries, passage maps). Trust scores only from official-style timed practice.
Buying a $2k Course Before One Full Timed Baseline
Without section scores you pay for a generic syllabus instead of your actual weak English/Math/Reading tags.
Better: One full timed practice first (core three; Science only if you already chose YES). Score Plan on the report. Course only if you still need structure after two focused weeks.
Pre-Enhanced Books and “Always Take Science” Packages as Primary
Guides built around classic section lengths and required Science waste drills on retired pacing.
Better: Prefer current-edition materials and official practice. Cap commercial books; finish timed sections on the Enhanced format.
