GRE General Test Primer
The GRE General Test is ETS’s graduate gatekeeping exam: one assessment used by thousands of graduate, business, and law programs worldwide. ETS positions it as an objective read on skills that matter across fields—not a major-specific content dump.
In ETS’s words, the GRE measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing—“skills that have been developed over a long period of time and aren’t related to a specific field of study but are important for all.” That’s why working adults, career-changers, and straight-through seniors all land on the same V / Q / AWA scales.
Format facts reflect the shorter GRE General Test (beginning September 22, 2023): one Issue essay, two Verbal sections, two Quant sections, section-level adaptive design. Confirm current details at ets.org/gre for your test date.

Scoring Benchmarks
Principles We Will Not Compromise On
- Official Educational Testing Service (ETS) materials (PowerPrep, Official Guide, Official practice books) beat random volume for score prediction.
- Train the shorter section lengths—old long-GRE pacing habits mislead.
- Section-adaptive means section 1 is high leverage; don’t rush into avoidable misses.
- Error logs by question type beat passive review.
- Use AI prompts to tutor skills; verify gains on official practice.
Why Your GRE Score Matters
- GRE scores help programs predict who thrives in grad school
- Programs usually weigh GRE and undergrad GPA together
Shorter GRE FAQ & Jargon
New to the shorter GRE General Test or decoding V/Q/AWA? Straight answers and a jargon table — current format only (from Sept 2023). POWERPREP is score truth; prompts here are the tutor layer between full practice.
What is the shorter GRE (vs the old long GRE)?
Since September 22, 2023 the GRE General Test is about 1 hour 58 minutes: one Analyze an Issue essay, two Verbal sections, two Quant sections. The Argument essay is gone. Do not train a multi-hour classic GRE as current.
Is Analytical Writing (AWA) removed?
No. AWA still exists as one Issue task (30 minutes), scored 0–6. Only the Argument task was removed. Use the AWA? prompt on this hub if you are unsure how many hours Issue deserves versus Verbal and Quant.
How does section-adaptive Verbal/Quant work?
Each measure has two sections. Performance on the first section routes the difficulty of the second. Train section clocks separately (for example Verbal 12Q/18m then 15Q/23m) — never as one merged 27 questions in one block.
How is the GRE scored?
Verbal and Quant each 130–170; AWA 0–6 half-points. Programs weight V/Q differently; some care about AWA floors. POWERPREP and official ETS materials are the honest practice signal.
What is Quantitative Comparison (QC)?
A Quant item type: compare Quantity A vs B (or say the relationship cannot be determined). Common trap zone under time. Drill QC habits, not only standard problem-solving.
What are Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence?
Verbal item types: TC fills blanks in a passage; SE picks two choices that both fit and mean the same. Vocabulary-in-context and structure beat pure flashcard lists.
What is score truth for the GRE?
ETS POWERPREP and official practice. AI helps plan and explain; it does not replace a POWERPREP total. After a report, use the Score Plan prompt on this hub.
Home edition vs test center — does prep change?
Content is the same GRE; logistics differ (room scan, proctoring, equipment). Build the same V/Q/AWA skills, then run a logistics checklist for your modality in the Test Day prompt.
How do TestLessons prompts fit in?
Copy a hub tab, fill real V/Q/AWA numbers and weak item types, run in a major assistant. Overview for format, AWA? for writing effort, Practice/Weak Area for drills. Site FAQ covers product mechanics; this block is shorter GRE literacy.
Should I still practice the Argument essay?
Not for the current General Test. Spend writing time on Issue structure and clarity if AWA matters for your programs; put remaining hours into Verbal and Quant.
